Animated Timer

01/29/10 | by Troy Chollar [mail] | Categories: Tutorial

On a recent show I was asked (minutes before needed onscreen) to display a timer for some group interaction. Of course the answer was 'no problem'... and I got to work. Here is the result:

New Transitions Sample

Making this visual timer is easy.

1. Here is my sample slide, using PPT 2007's Civic template.

2. Next I created 2 cirlces of identical size. For the "timer" cirlce I made it red and applied some Shape Styling.

3. Using the alignment tools both circles are set to stack and then positioned on slide.

4. Apply an entrance animation to the top/red circle:
- Wheel
- 1 Spoke

5. Customize the time (of the entrance animation) to anything up to 99 minutes.

6. Run the show!

Re creating this slide shows a shocking abuse of the UI, which is present in both PPT 2007 and 2010: You have to right click on the drop list of values and enter 10:00.

Quite why Microsoft did not have 'add custom time' as an option on the timing drop down is beyond me.

Matthew,

I absolutely agree! But the developers at MS listened and with PPT 2010 it becomes far better with a custom timing option directly on the ribbon! (but we loose the presets for quickly applying slow-med-fast-etc.)

Troy, I love this timer! It's easy to create and flexible. It's the best one I've seen since I created mine *grin* (which, if you don't mind, I'll refer to here: http://www.ellenfinkelstein.com/powerpoint_tip_create_timer.html). Mine is also animated, but takes a little more time to prepare. It shows all the numbers (seconds or minutes) and changes them as the time passes. And yours is good-looking too!
